How to succeed as a distance learner

Studying on your own can be challenging, but there are many things you can do to help yourself stay motivated and stick to the goals you've set for your education.

Remember, you are not alone! The staff at VLN are here to help. Depending on the program you choose, you may work with a counsellor, teachers and registration staff to choose your subjects, set goals and deadlines and make long-term plans for your future.

You may also work with a parent, guardian or friend, to help you stay on track. If you would like more information about how families and friends can support distance learners, please visit our Parents' Page.

VLN students recommend...

We conducted a survey in 2003, to find out what our students did to plan their studies, set goals and stay organised. Here are some of the top tips we received:

  • Set up a weekly timetable and stick to it!
  • Write up a plan for each day; structuring your day will help you stay focused.
  • Make a plan for the year, then concentrate on one day at a time...
  • Stay on top of deadlines: write them down and keep them handy.
  • Take regular, short breaks so that you don't burn out.
  • Switch off or get rid of anything that might distract you during study periods: music, MSN, books, television... Do not play computer games!
  • Choose a designated work space and give yourself plenty of room to study. You need a comfortable chair and lots of light.
  • Make folders for each subject, to keep them organised.
  • Read your course materials before starting work. When you do start, work through from beginning to end - don't jump around!
  • If you get stuck, ask! The sooner you find help, the sooner you'll finish your course and, ultimately, your program.
  • Learn about what suits you: some of us like to work near windows and natural light; some of us work best in a library carrel. Find out what kind of environment helps you to get your work done!
